It’s Incredible Edible Guided Walks season again. Heralding the end of spring and start of summer these are a great way to discover new green spaces and growing places in Lambeth or revisit old favourites you’ve watched seed and sprout into very special areas.
This free walk was led by two Incredible Edible Lambeth Tour Guides and while the weather reminded us May is the most unpredictable month for gardeners and walkers, the mood shone brightly. A Streatham walk the day after Crystal Palace won the FA Cup was brimming with joy.
The Community Garden at The Rookery had their smiley Sunday welcome and their 200-year-old mulberry tree was in leaf. We should start to see fruit by our next visit on Wednesday July 16th.
Walkers had the incredible pleasure of being joined by Streatham green space pioneer Amanda Waite who is part of the Wellfield Road Planter Project and a founder of Railside Community Garden. Amanda walked with us sharing her experiences of guerilla gardening, community links and plant care.
The route concluded at Railside Community Garden on Wellfield Road which is usually open on Saturdays. Amanda is a neighbour and co-gardener of one of the Tour Guides leading the walk and they gave a private impromptu tour of the rail tunnel and beehives. Their honey will be ready for sale very soon.
Several walkers happily joined in some garden work, more of the neighbours popped by. Cups of tea and coffee appeared and Councillor Donatus Ananywu’s wife let us in a few secrets of their garden at home.
