It’s time! We are ready to begin our new community composting project and we need your help!
We have opportunities for two people to work alongside estate residents and Lambeth Council to establish 25 new community composting sites over the next 2 years on Lambeth estates.
This would be an excellent post for someone wanting to support climate and community resilience, and to develop their skills in community action, engagement, development and composting.
Background IEL
Over the past three years IEL has:
- Supported members with seeds, compost, composting bins, members’ meetings, talks and advice – leading to an increase in membership to over 200 groups and over 600 individuals
- Opened the way to more food growing and biodiversity on housing estates with our Template of Engagement – building relationships between residents and the council
- Mapped land available for growing
In the next year we want to expand food growing in the borough and continue our support for members with the aim that more people are able to grow more food, particularly on the borough’s housing estates.
A key aim is to ensure that Lambeth’s diverse communities are better reflected and empowered throughout the organisation.
Composting project

The composting posts will:
- Provide members with the information, capacity building and resources they need to sustain community composting.
- Develop a model for community composting on urban housing estates
- Support the development of at least 25 composting sites across Lambeth’s housing estates by May 2024
You will be responsible for:
- Recruiting people and groups to run their own composting projects on Lambeth housing estates. Providing training and mentoring in running composting clubs.
- Engaging a diverse range of people living on Lambeth’s housing estates with composting – outreach and marketing the project.
- Working with local people to design marketing materials that are inclusive and engaging.
- Developing the Template of Engagement so that it supports joint working between communities and housing managers. Developing working methodologies for consultation, implementation and management of the composting sites.
- Developing community voice via quarterly gatherings.
- Arranging training for two people in constructing compost bins, commission construction at the new composting sites.
- Liaising with Lambeth housing officers and attending a quarterly meeting with Lambeth housing managers
- Producing information for quarterly and annual evaluation reports and liaise with funders.
- Organising annual Food Stories for composting volunteers to tell their stories alongside composting and other experts
- Liaising with Climate Action Fund holders nationwide (as facilitated by funders).
Support and training
- IEL director support with project management, communications, community engagement, governance, marketing and financial management
- Visit to Brighton and Hove composting project
- Conflict management training
Essential
- Experience of, and commitment to, working with a diverse range of stakeholders including statutory and community partners and community members
- Community engagement across a diverse range of stakeholders
- An excellent self-starter – able to take initiative to ensure the composting project can be delivered
- Experience of managing people
- Experience of conflict management
- High level of organisational skills and time management
- Excellent written and verbal communication across a variety of formats and audiences, including community and statutory partners, community groups and the wider public
- Strong communication skills – able to engage with a variety of stakeholders
- Experience of collaborative working
- Budget management and reporting
- Event management skills
- Engaged in the local community and familiar with the Borough of Lambeth (or similar London communities)
- Ability to develop and maintain partnerships
- IT competency, including online content management platforms
Desirable
- Marketing experience
- An understanding of the statutory sector
