On Monday IEL worked with a group of 15 volunteers from Deutsche bank, together with Moorlands gardeners to level out the ground at the entrance to the garden. We used donated lime wood chip to create an open entryway into the garden, making it more accessible to all. We spent hours pulling up tenacious rhizomous cooch grass from a disused plot, then covered with cardboard and woodchip to suppress the grass and create a mulch.

In addition, volunteers planted up a new bed with herbs, alpine strawberries, calendula, beans, spring onions and peas.

The volunteers were joined by resident pond expert Nick, who spent the day waist deep in water, skimming duckweed from the garden pond. This allows more oxygen and light into the water, preventing plants and animals from being smothered. This was a hard day’s work and we are grateful to all who volunteered their time!
