Declaretion on small farmers rights petition
Please if you can sign the attached petition thank you very very much 🙂
"Small-scale farmers and peasants feed the majority of the world’s population, yet they are experiencing escalating levels of violence and oppression. Their existence, livelihoods, and communities are threatened by the expansion of global agribusiness, which is grabbing their land and seeds and destroying the environment they rely on for food production. Small-scale farmers and peasants are fighting for a way of life where food is a right as well as a source of nutrition and culture and where decisions about production and consumption are in the hands of communities.
This week at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Geneva, the Human Rights Council is in the final stages of negotiations to approve a declaration of rights for small-scale farmers and peasants around the world. It has taken 17 years to get to this point, led by social movements such as La Via Campesina, and if approved the declaration will help protect the livelihoods of small-scale farmers here in the UK and all over the world.
This Friday, the Human Rights Council will decide whether to approve this declaration for adoption by the UN. Our friends at the Landworkers’ Alliance (a small-scale farmers union and the UK member of global social movement La Via Campesina) have just found out that the UK government are planning to vote against this declaration."
