The Lairdale Estate Community Allotment The allotment is at the entrance of the Lairdale Estate off Rosendale Road. Using a narrow strip of land next to the car park and with the help of Edible Lambeth, we established a wonderful vegetable growing space seven years ago. We have a core group of residents volunteering their time led by Andy Begley who is an experienced gardener and teaches others with patience and kindness. He is always keen to try something new, so when another resident, Rima, provided seed for exotic Asian beans and pumpkins he enthusiastically included these plants in the beds. Rima had grown these with her mother as a child in Bangladesh. These were a huge success and drew lots of comments from passersby. For such a small space we mange to grow an amazing amount of produce. Because of the garden’s location on Rosendale Road, many people stop and talk to us when we are gardening, giving us tips and exchanging plants. The local children’s nursery has even asked to visit the space with young children. We love our little growing space, it’s a wonderful way to connect with our community.
Welcome to Moorlands Nature Garden Allotment, a secret on the Moorlands Estate, close to the community centre on Corry Drive. Resident Kathleen McCann deserves a medal for her resilience to set this place up in the first place (a derelict former housing site many years ago) and to keep believing in it. She contacted us at Loughborough Farm, there was funding and we had fun with Froglife building bog garden , hibernacula , pond dipping with children at local Hillmead school, Winter Wassail and even a visit from the Lambeth Living Well Collaborative on safari with its monthly breakfast meeting on safari… there’s been tons of food grown here over the years, including Portuguese bogandas in trees… but it needs investment and care and people to hear what Kathleen has to say.
With the help of the local community Friends of Gipsy Hill have started to transform what was environmentally impoverished land by Gipsy Hill station into a wildlife habitat, an educational and community space, and a beautiful green garden!
Friends of Gipsy Hill is a community group committed to inspiring residents’ involvement and sustainable use of local spaces for community wellbeing
Over the years the land adjoining Gipsy Hill station along Sainsbury Road had deteriorated considerably, making the station less enjoyable to use and encouraging littering and fly tipping. Friends of Gipsy Hill have made huge improvements to the area, making the walk to the Platform 1 entrance more enjoyable and the area a positive place for all those who live and work around it.
This front garden is on kennington road and is such a lovely garden, with a low wall surrounding in passerby can look in and admire the work done.

Four raised beds, two water butts and a couple of compost bins, cared for by the residents of Lanercost Close
Here are some photos of our botanic patch in June 2023, at Rosethorn Close, Thornton Road, SW12 0JP. Grown from SL Botanical Society seeds it is still thriving from 2017. Our own garden has done well this Spring to early Summer, roses and some fig and cherry, despite the challenging dry weather. We are on the IEL map. We are trying to grown some vegetables in the back garden and next year would welcome some IEL compost and small plants as we have grown from seeds each year, which are not always successful. Best wishes Rocio and Stephen Adams.
