Hi a few of us would will want to come along from Cowley Food Farm we also need topsoil do you know of any sources????

    • Incredible Edible Lambeth says:

We look forward to seeing you, Annie. See my comment above about bringing a car/van if necessary.
Ah topsoil! As a garden designer I know of landscaping suppliers, but I’ve never been that happy with the sustainability of its sourcing. When you come along I can give you some names or you can google direct. You can usually find topsoil on ebay etc – it’s a cheap way for people digging out basement extensions to get rid of earth. This is usually free, but has a high cost in terms of time shovelling and your vehicle’s axles. It will contain weed seeds and pieces of perennial weeds, stones and some chance of contamination (as many places in London) unless you know the site has been domestic use for 200 (?) years.
A slow, but 100% sustainable way of producing loam (ie mineral soil) is to make a turf stack – when you’re clearing a lawn/turf pile the sods upside down in a neat barrow – and wait two years!
As my comment to Dodo, your request highlights the needs of what Lambeth growing groups need. Can you help us campaign to get good growing media on the agenda?
      Look forward to talking more!

Hi, I hope you had a successful day today, despite the rain! I was hoping to come by to get some compost that we need for a growing/permaculture stall we are doing at an event next Sunday (Come We GROW – http://www.c-j-e.co.uk/come-we-grow.php)
but was unable to organise a vehicle to collect it. I was wondering if it may be at all possible to collect some next Saturday, when there should be a vehicle available?

    Thanks!

    • Incredible Edible Lambeth says:

Hi Sarah, this was a one-off for now, as generally the depot is not open to the public. We had the compost specially moved to an accessible site. However, as it was so successful there could be more around Lambeth – watch this space. I think you’re in Southwark? Do pester your council to make growing media available. We pay our councils to manage our food and green waste – it makes sense it goes back to the residents. All the very best with your event next weekend
      Fiona

  3. Sarah says:

Thanks for the reply and advice. Is that included in what residents pay as council tax then?

  4. Fiona says:

We are having another compost giveaway, 9th June Clapham Common 11 – 2.30 – watch this website

  5. The Hues Family says:

The Hues Family had great fun this morning learning how to plant pumpkin seeds and helping to put compost around the strawberry plants and runner beans. We are looking forward to seeing how they grow and helping out when we can.
